Atlanta’s championship hopes now depend on winning at home Thursday after the Dream lost 64–55 to Golden State in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals. The Valkyries lead the series 3–2.

The WNBA’s game report describes a contest that remained close well into the third quarter before Golden State found the separation Atlanta could not erase. The Dream trailed just 25–22 at halftime, leaving ample opportunity to recover despite a difficult offensive start.

The baskets that created separation

Rhyne Howard’s three-point play brought Atlanta within 34–31 with 4:59 remaining in the third. Kiah Stokes subsequently supplied timely perimeter scoring, including a three with 2:46 left in the quarter and another in the fourth.

Those shots mattered beyond their immediate value. A center who can score outside forces the opposing defense to account for more floor space. For Atlanta, the problem became defending the rim without conceding an equally damaging shot elsewhere.

Howard finished with 20 points. Angel Reese contributed seven points, 15 rebounds and five assists, but Atlanta could not turn that rebounding and playmaking into enough offense.

A narrow margin became an urgent problem

In a game with so few points, each empty possession carried extra weight. Atlanta did not need a perfect offensive night to compete; it needed enough productive trips to prevent Golden State from stretching a manageable deficit.

The Dream now return to State Farm Arena for Game 6 on Thursday. Their next task is immediate: generate cleaner scoring opportunities before the series ends on their home floor.
