Houston’s rebounding advantage raises a question Atlanta must answer beyond the first contest.

By Rodney Holloway

The Hawks’ early defensive assessment should include what happens after an opponent misses. Winning the initial matchup has limited value if the other team keeps possession.

Houston outrebounded Atlanta 52–35 in Monday’s game, according to The Dream Shake’s game analysis. That total includes both offensive and defensive rebounds; it should not be treated as a count of second-chance opportunities.

It does establish a substantial difference on the glass. Explaining every cause would require a fuller possession review, rather than assuming the center alone accounts for the gap.

Rebounding belongs to the entire lineup

A rotation that takes a big man away from the basket changes everyone else’s responsibilities. Wings may need to find a body before pursuing the ball. Guards may need to stay involved until possession is secure rather than anticipate an outlet.

Those are principles Atlanta can apply when evaluating the game, not claims that every missed rebound followed the same breakdown.

The useful questions are specific: Was the initial shot contested? Who had inside position? Did help defense create a size mismatch? Did the lineup recover after rotating?

Avoid solving one problem by creating another

Committing additional players to rebounding also affects transition offense. Atlanta must balance securing the ball with preserving the ability to advance it quickly. The answer is unlikely to be an identical assignment for all five players on every shot.

That makes coordination more important than a general demand for effort. The next game against Miami offers an immediate opportunity to assess whether the Hawks can turn defensive work into a completed possession and a controlled start to their own offense.
