Preview · Hawks + Dream
One Atlanta team is starting its season. The other is trying to take the lead in a championship series.
The Hawks were scheduled to open their 2026–27 NBA campaign at Orlando on October 21, tipping at 7 p.m. Eastern at Kia Center. The Dream’s Finals Game 3 against Golden State was scheduled for 8 p.m. at State Farm Arena. At the research cutoff, neither game had a verified result.
For the Hawks, the opener offers a first look at how an encouraging preseason translates. Atlanta went 4–1 and finished by beating Dallas 135–111, making 21 threes and recording 36 assists. Orlando will supply a different set of decisions. The Dallas numbers are a starting reference, not a prediction of what the Magic will give up.
The offensive question worth watching is what happens after Atlanta’s first option disappears. Does the next pass force another rotation? Does the receiver attack an opening or hold the ball while it closes? Can the Hawks still find a reasonable shot when the possession reaches its final seconds?
These are the matchup questions to watch; Orlando’s game plan has not been established here. A confirmed lineup would make the discussion of ballhandling and size more precise. It would show who is initiating, who is finishing and which combinations Snyder wants to test first. The starting five remained unconfirmed at the research cutoff.
The Dream’s circumstances are more immediate. Golden State took the Finals opener 68–64 on October 17. Atlanta answered 79–65 on October 19, leaving the series tied 1–1 after two games.
Reese finished Game 2 with 30 points and 16 rebounds. Canada had 10 assists; Howard had six steals. Atlanta also made 30 free throws while shooting 21-for-62 from the field. That was enough to win on the road. At home, the next question is whether the Dream can improve the field-goal offense while keeping the defensive activity that gave them other ways to score.
There’s no reason to assume the free-throw count, turnover opportunities or shooting percentages will repeat. The basketball task is to create useful possessions again, with whatever decisions the next game demands.
The venue matters for readers planning their night. The Hawks and Dream confirmed in an October 13 joint statement that Finals Games 3 and 4 would be played at State Farm Arena. A description of the crowd or its effect on the game will have to wait for reporting from the event.
Before tipoff, the practical checks are availability, starters, start times and viewing information. A provider’s team associations are not an official active roster, and a scheduled tip doesn’t establish which broadcaster carries a game in each market. Game-specific injury reports and broadcast access remained unconfirmed at the research cutoff.
The Hawks’ opener begins the regular-season evidence. The Dream’s next game breaks a Finals tie. Both reports should turn on what actually happens on October 21, rather than carrying preseason expectations or Game 2 assumptions forward as results.
